Project AWARE - Aquatic World Awareness, Responsibility and Education - was developed by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors in 1989 "to stress divers' roles in conserving these environments and create a group of effective environmental advocates". To quote John J. Cronin, founder of PADI "We want to feel that our children, their children and generations to come will be able to enjoy the underwater world that has given us so much. There are so many significant problems facing mankind, but as divers, this is truly our cause. If divers do not take an active role in preserving the aquatic realm, who will?"
Golden Frog Scuba is highly committed to this philosophy.
In July of 2007, shortly after arriving in Panama, we held our first Project AWARE event with one of the local schools. The event was held at Playa la Barqueta, and the students cleaned up more than 650 pounds of garbage from the beach.
Since then Golden Frog Scuba, collaborating with a local Peace Corp volunteer, has worked with other schools in the area to educate and stress the importance of keeping the aquatic realm free of debris.
In addition to the "classroom" education and actual clean-up portion of the event, we also give the students a chance to try Discover Scuba. By allowing them to put on the gear and get in the water, we try to give them a greater correlation and appreciation as to the importance of a clean environment - under water as well as on the surface.
